Middle School Opportunities

Middle school can be one of the most difficult parts of a person's life. It's filled with feelings of uncertainty, anxiety, and pressure from several sources. Students face pressure from their parents and teachers to perform well in school, and from their friends as well. It can be hard for them to make the right choices, but having the right friends can make that much simpler.
The question becomes complicated. How does a middle school student make the right kind of friends--friends who will support and encourage them, and help them stand against peer pressure? A hard question can have an easy answer: clubs and sports.
Joining a club or sport can be just the positive impact a student needs in order to feel more accepted. Our middle school is pleased to have several clubs that students can join and participate in, and are exploring adding more clubs to this coming school year (2022-2023). If you or your student are interested in a club that does not yet exist, we encourage you to reach out the middle school team to inquire about it.

Middle School Clubs & Activities

ASL
Mrs. Friend sponsors the ASL club at TMS, and it's open to all middle school students. The club meets on the first Friday of every month.
Learning American Sign Language will allow you to communicate with more people--people you may not be able to communicate with otherwise.

Art Club
Ms. Light, the TMS art teacher, also heads the Middle School Art Club. The club meets on the third Monday of every month. If you love all things artsy, this is where you belong!
As an Art Club member, you will work alongside your peers to learn new art techniques and create arts and crafts.

Blue Crew
The Blue Crew meets on the first and third Monday of every month and is sponsored by Mr. Degler.
The TMS Blue Crew is a collection of students who show up to support the TMS Athletic teams! This year, we will have our first organized Blue Crew for TMS Football, and will continue our support of basketball and other sports in the winter.

Builders' Club
Builders Club is a service organization for middle school students. It gives middle school students the opportunity to give back to their community and teaches them self-respect, self-confidence, and leadership skills. It is part of the Kiwanis Family that includes our local Kiwanis and our high school Key Club.
All middle school students are eligible to join. It is sponsored by Ms. Cole and Ms. Stone.

FFA
FFA at TMS is sponsored by Ms. Kilmer, Mrs. Hartley, and Ms. Mars. Any 7th grade student enrolled in AgLeadership can join, though 8th grade students can also join (must pay dues).
The club meets on the first Monday of every month.FFA is a dynamic youth organization that changes lives and prepares members for premier leadership, personal growth and career success through agricultural education. It develops members’ potential and helps them discover their talent through hands-on experiences, which gives them the tools to achieve real-world success.
Members are future chemists, veterinarians, government officials, entrepreneurs, bankers, international business leaders, teachers and premier professionals in many career fields.
FFA is an intracurricular student organization for those interested in agriculture and leadership. It is one of the three components of agricultural education.

National Junior Honor Society
Sponsored by Ms. Friend, this club is open to seventh and eighth grade students after the 1st 9 weeks, but only if the student has an overall GPA of 3.75 or higher. Learn more here!

Paper Publication
Lead by Ms. Wyatt, the Paper Publication club aims to create a newspaper. If you enjoy learning about current events, writing, or taking pictures, this club may be for you!

Robotics
Ms. Light and Mr. Vittorio sponsor the Middle School Robotics club.
Do you like working with your hands, building robots, and programming them to do tasks? When you are a team member of the TMS VEX ROBOTICS, you have the opportunity to compete in a challenge with another team from a different school.
The objective is for team members to work together, controlling a (self-designed programmed or manually driven) robot to complete specific tasks to earn points.
TMS VEX ROBOTICS has the opportunity to compete against 20+ school teams, at 1-2 qualifier events, in the chance to qualify for the state competition, which is traditionally held in March.

Student Council
Led by Laurie Crawford, Student Council is open to sixth, seventh, and eighth graders. It meets on the second and fourth Friday of every month.

Walking Club
Mrs. Cole sponsors the Walking Club, which is open to 6th graders. These students walk the halls together after school each Friday. If you enjoy comaraderie and walking with friends, join the club!

Yearbook
Ms. Light, the TMS art teacher, leads the Yearbook club, which meets every Monday and Friday. These students take pictures and help put together the middle school yearbook. If you're into art, photography, writing, and other creative stuff, this is the club for you!
From Ms. Light:
Are you interested in creating our TMS Yearbook for the school year 2023-2024? Do you love to write? How about designing layouts? Or taking photographs? If any of those hobbies speak to you, then you should apply to be a part of the Yearbook Staff. Mrs. Light is looking for 15 talented, organized, creative, and determined students to be a part of the TMS Yearbook Staff for the year 2023-2024.
As a TMS Yearbook Staff Member, you will be in charge of writing, creating, and designing the 2023-2024 Yearbook. This is a very big job and it’s important that you are flexible with your time. We will meet once a week during Club Time, but may need to meet some days after school and it’s important that you are able to attend as many meetings as possible, during and after school.

Yoga Club
Ms. Neely sponsors the Yoga Club, which aims to teach students how to do yoga. Yoga can be beneficial for mind and body!
This is a wellness club that focuses on mindful movement, breathing, and social-emotional strategies. They practice yoga poses, learn breathing techniques, and participate in activities that help us manage emotions and build healthy relationships. In this club, participants can get focused and relaxed for the school day ahead and learn useful practices that they can take with them.
