General Information
The National Junior Honor Society is open to students in seventh or eighth grade after the first nine weeks, provided they have an overall GPA of 3.75 or higher. After the application is issued, the student completes and returns the completed form within the date required; after that, a selection committee reviews the applications and selects students based on the principles of scholarship, character, citizenship, service and leadership.
Ms. Friend became the National Junior Honor Society sponsor in 2002, and next year will be the start of her twentieth year holding the position. The TCSC chapter is certified by the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP).
The TMS NJHS chapter has thirty-three members; oftentimes, the chapter has approximately 30-38 students. Once initiated, the bilaws state that the NJHS student must maintain an overall GPA of 3.5 or higher.
The NJHS's focus is for members to be role models for the other students at TMS, as well as into the community, and giving back/volunteering for our school and community.
What does the club do?
Throughout the years, the focus of the NJHS has been giving back to the community--as well as the school--along with being a leader and role model. Past activities include volunteering at Second Blessings, Good Shepherd Food Pantry, Encore/Senior Citizens, Millers Merry Manor, Boys and Girls Club, TES carnivals/fairs, kindergarten play day/picnic, TMS daycare during staff meetings, Lion's Club (sorting donated glasses), and working at the Pork Tent during the Tipton Pork Festival.
The highlight of the year is during May when NJHS members organize and entertain the kindergarten students during the end of the year at kindergarten picnic/play day. The NJHS members are able to work with the students and lead them through structured activities and provide encouragement and guidance. Following these activities, a pizza lunch is provided for the NJHS members. Before returning to the school, there is a special event honoring the eighth graders, as they will be proceeding to THS.
What can new members expect?
New members can expect to attend a mandatory monthly meeting before school, as well as completion and documentation of three hours of community service. Other duties include participating in fundraisers, kindergarten picnic, school projects, etc. A list of bilaws is discussed when giving out the applications in order for the students to identify the standards for being a NJHS member.
Other Noteworthy Information
Two years ago, a new community service project was initiated with Tiptons Millers Merry Manor: due to COVID, the residents of MMM needed new pillows and blankets. An outreach plan emerged and NJHS--along with TMS FFA--provided over 145 pillows and 340 blankets. The staff and residents at MMM were thrilled and immediately handed out these much-needed items to their residents. This venture was extremely rewarding for the TMS NJHS members to be a part of and experience.
