Blue Devil of the Future
-
Our beloved Blue Devil has had quite a few makeovers over the years. In March of 2022, our district introduced the new design of the Blue Devil. Modern and sophisticated, this new design perfectly embodies the #BlueFuture.
John Robertson, a high school teacher, led the school in the pursuit of a polished, beautiful logo. The logo was created by Section 127, a popular branding company.
To help honor our past, we would like to commemorate the history of the Blue Devil. Mr. John Robertson conducted in-depth research about our logo, and it is with great pride that we present his findings.
History of the Blue Devil
-
The First Blue Devil
This is a scan of the first documented Blue Devil, which appeared on the cover of the 1953 school yearbook.
This Blue Devil certainly has an antiquated feel to it. In this image, it almost looks shimmery or iridescent. The iconic strong eyebrows, pointed ears, and beard have been prominent features of subsequent Blue Devils as well.
While we aren't sure when this image debuted, it seems to have been utilized for several years.

Mid-60s Blue Devil
The next iteration of the Blue Devil came about sometime near the mid-60s.
Mr. Robertson was able to find this photograph of a young man at a game. We aren't sure of his identity, but he is wearing a Blue Devils shirt.
Looking closely at this man's shirt, we can clearly see the Blue Devil. Although it is difficult to see due to wrinkles and the man being seated, we can faintly make out the Blue Devil's prominent cheekbones, horns, and pointed ears.
This Blue Devil was stolen from Duke University. Duke's logo is pictured below.
Duke's logo from 1966, respectively.

Blue Devils Galore
From 1970 through the early 2000s, the Blue Devil took many shapes interchangeably.
"We didn't have a universal Blue Devil logo that we used," Mr. Robertson noted, "Pretty much anybody could use any Blue Devil that they chose to use at any time."
This inconsistency meant that sometimes, you'd see a Blue Devil with a mustache, yet other times, the Blue Devil would not have a mustache. Document creation, in regards to which Blue Devil was used, was largely left to the person creating the document.
It is important to note that the bottom three Blue Devils were all 'borrowed' from Duke University. In fact, our use of the Blue Devil in the middle even prompted a cease and desist from Duke University!
This is because the logo is trademarked (copyrighted) and they own the rights to it. Duke can use the graphic, and they can also tell others when they can or can't use it.
The full-body Devil was used on notebook covers at TMS and THS during the 90s--another logo taken from Duke.

The Forgotten Logo
This old logo was used in the 90s during a period of time when the school was trying to "get away" from the Blue Devil imagery.
Many people who attended school here during this time period don't even remember this logo.

2017's Blue Devil
2017 marked a truly special time for our corporation: we finally decided on a Blue Devil. In deciding upon an official logo, it was determined that all TCSC-related materials would use that logo.
This logo was shared with many schools--it originated as a mail-to-order clipart in a time when it was actually paper that would be clipped.
One of the main driving reasons we pursued a new logo is because we wanted a logo that was uniquely ours. We wanted something that only belongs to us--that is how we came to get our current logo!
And the rest, as they say, is history.
